Moving Color Tiles October 31, 2007

moving-color-tile-shower.jpgmoving-color-tile-shower.jpg There are a plethora of unique ceramic tiles, glass tiles and handmolded tiles to choose from in the tile industry today, but a company called Moving Color offers tiles that will stop you in your tracks. I found their vision statement down right inspiring and on the verge of challmoving-color-tile-shower.jpgmoving-color-tile-shower.jpgenging!

“The inspiration behind our concept is similar to the beauty of nature; we believe that our personal environments should be ever changing. Moving Color is a form of living art; therefore, the potential of our products are only limited by the imagination of the designer implementing them.”

The first series that caught my eye is called Northern Lights, inspired by the Northern Lights of Alaska. The tiles change color as they are heated!! The moving color is dynamic to the temperature of the heating agent whether it be water, radiant heat or steam.

Another series, called Liquid is simply inspired by the beauty of water. (available in 10 colors)

Tye-Dye
….speaks for itself.

I encourage you to look at their website where you can see a live example of the tiles changing color. The technology truly is amazing. If you are wondering how they do it - I wouldn’t begin to try. Instead, just marvel at the uniqueness and unlimited design options! (tell your kids that paying attention in Chemistry class can result in great ideas later!!)

For those of you that need the fine print:

Specifications:

All tiles come 4″x4″x3/8″ thick and are made of glass. Other sizes and trim pieces are available.

Can be used on floors, walls or counters

Each piece is handmade and therefore unique

All tiles are available in different temperature sensitivity ranges

Recommended setting material: Custom Building Products MegaFlex Ultimate Thin-set mortar (no admix necessary), Laticrete 254 Platinum Multipurpose Thin-set mortar (no admix necessary) or Mapei’s Kerabond Premium Dry-set mortar mixed with Keralastic Mortar Admix.

Recommended grout: Custom Building Products Prism Sure Color Grout, Laticrete 1500 Series Tile grout or Mapei’s Ker 200 Series and Ker 700 Ultra Color

There is a one year warranty on all workmanship of each tile and its ability to change color.

Product Considerations:

Moving color recommends that you keep the following elements in mind while designing your project. because there are quite a few that can influence the change in color such as: geographic location, time of day, size of the space, exterior or interior walls, ambient temperature, type of heat, length of time heat is applied, intensity of the heat, thickness of the glass and the distance from the heat source.

Disclaimers:

Variations will occur daily over time.

There is no way to predict the length of time they will change color.

Cracks, chips and bubbles and other irregularities are signs that the tiles are handmade and add to the character and beauty of each tile.

If any of these make you nervous, you might want to stay out of the handmolded tile category all together!

These are very cool tiles. I have had this idea to redo my shower and make one wall a giant fish tank. These tiles might be a more practical way of getting a similar effect.
