The fine dust comes from 1 of 2 sources.

1) If it is a tufted rug - it may the the glue that is used on the backing of the rug. Once the glue dries out, it starts to break down and leaves a large volume of fine dust. The proper way to correct this is to use a latex glue on the back of the rug and then cover the latex with a cheese cloth or felt.

2) Fine oriental rugs with a tight knot count can hold dust deep down in the rug between the warp and weft of the rug and the base of the face fibers.

The dust looks like black sand - it is really dirt that as you walk on the rug breaks down and gets trapped deep in the rug. Most good rug cleaning companies vibrate the rug (face down) to remove the fine dirt before it gets cleaned. You can get much of the dirt out by vaccuming the rug upside down - lower the beater bar to the lowest level. This may take several vaccumings.

Thanks!

Did your rug leave a HUGE amount of the fine dust or just a little? I just experienced this with one of my area rugs that I've had for years, and it's never been a problem until now. I was absolutely shocked at how much of the fine dust there was that showed up suddenly, just recently. I completely vacuumed the wood floor that it lay on, and vacuumed both sides of the area rug, and there is still a lot of the fine dust coming off of it (the dust also has a strange odor to it). Has anyone experienced this and if yes, what can be done about it? (I'm to the point where I'm tempted to throw out the area rug, which I'd hate to do since I really like it and it was somewhat costly.) Thanks for any info!

You may want to be very careful of what you spray on the back of the rug. If the rug is on a hard wood floor the chemicals may damage the finish, if you’re not using a pad.
