Question:

Is the “Bissell steam mop” which leaves the floor warm from steam and wet from steam good to use on a urethane coated oak floor? I worry the steam will break down the urethane seal or at least dull it’s finish.

Answer:

You have every right to be concerned with using a steam mop on a hardwood floor because water is one of hardwoods worst enemies!

I have cork flooring in my game room and with all the traffic in and out I would like to steam mop, but I am wondering is it okay to steam mop the cork?
Very concerned

Although steam cleaning works well on your carpets, it is not the recommended procedure for cleaning cork floors (see below for appropriate care)

  • To clean soiled areas on your cork floors, do not use soap and water. Excessive water (or steam) can damage cork floors. Instead, use only a cleaner formulated for use on hardwood floors.
  • Sweeping or vacuuming (without a beater bar) is recommended for regular cleaning to remove dirt particles that could scratch your floors.
  • Always wipe up spills immediately, since cork is a wood product and will absorb moisture.

Following these procedures should give you years of excellent performance and beauty from your natural cork floors.
